Choosing High School Classes: Advice for Rising 9th Grade Families
As your child transitions from middle school to high school, selecting the right classes can set the stage for a successful and enriching high school experience. Here are some key tips to guide you through this important process:
1. Enroll in Core Subjects
Ensure your child is signed up for a full year of essential subjects: English, math, science, foreign language (unless there is an exemption), and history. These core classes provide a solid educational foundation and are typically required for graduation.
2. Leverage Strengths and Interests
Consider what subjects your child excels in or enjoys the most. If higher-level classes are offered in these areas, encourage your child to challenge themselves. For example, if your child loves English and the high school offers an Honors English class for freshmen, this is a great opportunity to explore a subject they are passionate about and can excel in.
3. Math Curriculum Progression
The math course your child takes in 9th grade will generally be determined by their 8th-grade math placement. Make sure they continue on a path that challenges them appropriately and sets them up for success in higher-level math courses in the future.
4. Continue Foreign Language Studies
Many students begin taking a foreign language in middle school. If your child is doing well with that language, it is highly beneficial to continue studying it throughout high school. Students who stick with the same foreign language through their senior year often reach the highest level of coursework offered, which is highly valued by colleges, regardless of the student’s intended major. Consistency in language study shows commitment and allows for deeper proficiency, so choosing the right foreign language is important.
5. Explore Electives
Electives provide a chance to explore non-academic interests and can open doors to new passions or career paths. Encourage your child to select electives that intrigue them, as these classes can be both enjoyable and enlightening. Electives are a great way to discover new interests and skills outside the traditional academic subjects.
